Editor’s Message

In this edition, we’re taking a look at the effects on global trade of both geopolitics and the climate crisis. Right at the forefront of these trends are Johnians working in finance, international diplomacy and science.

Our cover interview is with diplomat Judith Slater who has just finished her term as High Commissioner of Jamaica. She discusses her wide-ranging roles and the most memorable moments of her long career.

We spoke with Bhaswar Chatterjee about the new rush to invest in artificial intelligence infrastructure, which demands alongside it new power sources to support the data centres being built. Without these sources there are genuine fears that some places could see dips in available power. But while renewables such as solar and wind are often the quickest energy sources to implement, political will has seen some of these projects slow down and even stop completely.

Meanwhile, alongside other huge events on the international political stage, there have also been changes in trade tariffs and their possible effects on the economies of different countries. Ben Shepherd, who advises governments on trade strategy, reveals his thoughts about recent developments.

We also hear from Dominic Hall about his startup using artificial intelligence to find new targets for gene selection within seeds in a bid to create crops that can withstand climate change. And Professor Julia Jones discusses her career in nature conservation research.

Finally we speak with James Burton about his conducting career and the tracks that have meant most to him along the way, as well as Budweiser Brewing Group (UK and Ireland) CEO Brian Perkins who gives his insights on leadership.
