Leaving a gift in your will

For information on leaving a gift to the College in your will, please visit our legacy giving webpages.

Company matched giving

You may be able to donate to St John’s College through a company matched giving scheme, enabling you to increase the value of your gift. Some companies offer this on a pound-for-pound basis, while others will specify the amount they’re prepared to give.

Please contact your HR department in the first instance to find out whether your company operates such a scheme. We would be grateful if  you could contact the Development Office (development@joh.cam.ac.uk) if you plan to take part in this scheme, or if you need any further advice.

UK tax-efficient giving:

Gift Aid

St John’s College is a registered charity (number 1137428) meaning gifts from UK taxpayers can be made under the Gift Aid Scheme. This enables the College to reclaim the basic rate (20%) of tax that was paid on your donation. For example, an £80 gift is actually worth £100 to the College. This won’t cost you anything as long as your collective donations for the current tax year (6 April to 5 April) are no more than four times what you have paid in tax.

To donate with Gift Aid, please chose this option on the online donation form or request a paper declaration form from the Development Office (development@joh.cam.ac.uk). For further information about the Gift Aid scheme, visit the government website.

Higher rate taxpayers

Higher rate taxpayers can also reclaim the difference between the basic (20%) and higher (40%) rate of tax on their self-assessment tax return. So a gift of £80, which is worth £100 to St John’s after Gift Aid is reclaimed, would actually cost a higher rate taxpayer £60 once they have reclaimed the higher rate tax. Likewise for additional rate (45%) taxpayers, for whom the final cost of a gift worth £100 to St John’s would be £55.

Give As You Earn (GAYE), or payroll giving, allows you to make a donation from your pre-tax income. The donations are made after National Insurance contributions are calculated but before Income Tax is deducted, meaning you get immediate tax relief on your donation. For example, every £10 donated costs you £8 if you pay regular tax – or just £6 if you pay higher rate tax.

You can use GAYE if you are an employee paid weekly or monthly through PAYE or if you receive a company and/or personal pension and your provider deducts tax through PAYE. In addition, your employer or pension provider will need to run a payroll giving scheme. If they don’t, you could ask if they would be willing to start one (read more about running payroll).

Please contact your HR/Payroll department in the first instance to find out whether your company operates such a scheme. If your employer or pension provider runs a payroll giving scheme, you simply authorise them to make the donation from your wages or pension before deducting any tax.

We would be grateful if  you could contact the Development Office (development@joh.cam.ac.uk) if you plan to take part in this scheme, or if you need any further advice.

When giving shares, a donor can claim Income Tax relief on the market value of the shares on the date the gift is made, as well as any incidental costs such as broker’s or legal fees. In addition, when shares are donated to a charity, the donor does not have to pay Capital Gains Tax (CGT), currently 10–20% (depending on Income Tax status), on any increase in value of the shares.

Please contact the Development Office (development@joh.cam.ac.uk) if you intend to gift shares and we will liaise with the College broker on your behalf.
