The Eagle

The College’s annual record.

Mailed and digitally published at the beginning of the academic year, each issue of The Eagle features: articles written by students, alumni, Fellows and staff; reports from student societies and sports; news from the Johnian community; members’ obituaries; an annual list of donors; and information on new academic appointments.

Editors’ message

It has been a busy year at St John’s and you can read about the academic achievements and research projects of Johnians in the featured articles and reports. Extracurricular collegiate life has also been vibrant. The JCR and SBR committees have worked hard to organise events and improve student welfare, the Choir went on their first international tour since 2019 and the LMBC men reclaimed their rightful spot at the head of the river in both May and Lent Bumps.

The College, like wider society, has also been grappling with the challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence and digital technologies. Many of the articles in this issue touch on this theme; you can read about Jelal Hydyrov’s (2022) research placement using machine learning for radiographic reporting, Dr Amy Orben presents her thoughts on the interaction between digital technologies and young people’s mental health and Ifeoma Chike (2022) reflects on the impact that artificial intelligence is having on students and how it may be harnessed as a power for good.
