The College community gathered on 31 May to celebrate the ceremonial opening of the newly reimagined River Court Gardens. Designed by Arne Maynard and made possible through philanthropic support, the gardens create an inviting space for study, reflection and socialising, bringing new energy to a previously underused area.

…the changes we are making to the College landscape
embody the belief that gardens are essential to the complete intellectual
environment. We appreciate them for leisure and pleasure but, more than this,
time spent in a well-considered garden helps to incubate deep learning and
original ideas. -Heather Hancock, Master of St John’s

The Gents of St John’s sang from punts on the river, performing their newly released single Sunny alongside previews from their forthcoming album. The occasion also coincided with the birthday of the College’s Founder, Lady Margaret Beaufort (born 31 May 1443), which was marked with a collective rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’.

Students are already making the most of the gardens – using the space to revise, as well as to relax, and this impact will grow as the planting matures. We look forward to welcoming Johnians to experience this space on your next visit to St John’s.
River Court Gardens are a powerful example of how philanthropic support can transform life in College – strengthening community and contributing to a sustainable and biodiverse environment.
