New Year Honours List 2025

Six Johnians were recognised in the King’s New Year Honours List 2025.

David Biddulph (1969) was made a Medallist of the Order of the British Empire (BEM) for services to rowing. David is a retired systems engineer and a rowing umpire. He studied Engineering at St John’s College from 1969 to 1972.

Professor Gillian Carr (1994) was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to Holocaust research and education. She is a Fellow of St Catharine’s College, a Member of the McDonald Institute of Archaeological Research, and University Professor in Conflict Archaeology and Holocaust Heritage at the Institute of Continuing Education, where she is also Academic Director in Archaeology. Gillian graduated with an MPhil in World Archaeology from St John’s in 1995.

Jessica Glover (1995) was made a Companion of the Order of Bath (CB) for public service. Following Director General roles in the Cabinet Officer, Jessica was appointed to the role of Director General, Growth and Productivity in HM Treasury in July 2023. She oversees the Treasury’s work on spending and policies to create sustainable growth across the UK and serves as Chief Scientific Adviser for HM Treasury. Jessica studied Modern Languages at St John’s from 1995 to 1999.

Susannah Hardyman (2004) was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to education. Susannah is Founder and lately Chief Executive Officer of Action Tutoring, London. Susannah graduated from St John’s in 2007 and has since pursued a career in the charity sector. In 2012 she founded Action Tutoring, a charity making the benefits of tutoring available to those that wouldn’t otherwise afford it. Action Tutoring grew from a start up, to a national programme and was highly influential in the founding of the government’s National Tutoring Programme at the peak of COVID-19. In December 2024 Susannah stepped down to take up the post as CEO at the youth charity Impetus. Impetus backs over 20 impactful charities tackling attainment, engagement in school and youth employment, providing funding and strategic support, as well as influencing the government on these issues.

Clare Harvey (2003) was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to education. Clare is Chief Executive of The Ogden Trust. The Trust supports schools, teachers, projects and programmes that are committed to enhancing physics teaching and learning. Clare matriculated at St John’s in 2003 and studied Natural Sciences.

Professor Timothy Insoll (1992) was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to Archaeology in Bahrain and UK/Bahrain relations. Timothy is Al-Qasimi Professor of African and Islamic Archaeology at the University of Exeter. He is also founder and director of the Centre for Islamic Archaeology. Timothy received an undergraduate degree from the University of Sheffield and went on to pursue a PhD at St John’s. He was a Research Fellow at St John’s between 1995 and 1998.
