Political Leadership: Lessons from the Plantagenets
Richard Partington (2021), Senior Tutor of St John’s College, brings his expertise in medieval history to this online talk exploring what the rulers of medieval England can teach us about leadership today.
Drawing on his recent book Arise England: Six Kings and the Making of the English State (co-written with Caroline Burt), as well as his wider research on medieval justice, warfare and government, Richard takes as his starting point a compelling proposition that leadership is universal across time and place.
From the failures of ‘bad’ King John to the celebrated reign of Edward III, the Plantagenet monarchs offer a vivid and revealing lens through which to examine what makes and breaks effective leadership.
Richard’s talk will identify the characteristics, behaviours and circumstances that produced success or disaster in medieval England, and consider how these continue to apply to the leaders and institutions of our own time.
