Afternoon activities

3.30–4.30pm
Intimate Strangers: Patterns of Segregation in Early-Victorian Manchester
Emily Chung is a final-year PhD candidate with the Faculty of History and the Cambridge Group for the History of Population and Social Structure. Her doctoral research examines mechanisms of urban change in Victorian Manchester through the use of geodemographic tools and archival source material. It builds on work undertaken for the MPhil in Economic and Social History at Cambridge, and a Bachelor’s in Architecture from the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.

The relationship between mental imagery and memory
Will Duckett is a PhD Student at the Memory Laboratory, Department of Psychology. His research focuses on the relationship between mental imagery and memory, investigating if the images we create in our minds influence our memories. He is particularly interested in those who cannot form images in their minds – aphantasics.

There will be a time to ask questions to the speakers after both talks.

3.30-4.30pm
Tour of the Gardens

Gardeners, David Austrin and Zoe Cullen, will lead an hour long walking tour of the gardens of St John’s, highlighting the new developments to the gardens in the past year.

6.30pm
BBC Radio 3 Broadcast in the Chapel
You are welcome to stay for an evening concert in the Chapel recorded by BBC Radio 3, featuring organist Wayne Marshall and baritone Tom Butler (2018). Please select the option on your booking form to state your interest in attending. We will get in touch at a later date with a free booking link.
