Dear Johnian,
It’s an invigorating time to be in College. The cold, grey months of winter are finally giving way to stretches of milder weather. Groups are opting for sunny lunches on the Buttery patio, and students are spilling out in clusters on the Paddock. The Gardening Team is busy tending new bursts of springtime and sending the scent of fresh-cut grass through our open office windows.

Those returning to St John’s this summer will find two outdoor spaces completely transformed. In the Bin Brook area at the end of New Court, the stream is meandering again. We’re adding landscaped paths and seating, with a bridge and stepping stones in the brook to allow easier access to the back sections of Cripps. River Court, which was previously a simple lawn surrounded by New Court, the Fisher Building and Cripps, is becoming an outdoor oasis with benches, an abundance of shrubs and plants, water features and grassy levels of seating beside the river. We can’t wait for you to experience these spaces.
We look forward to welcoming many of you back soon for your MA lunch, reunions and other events like Sunday on the Backs and Johnian Society Day. But you don’t have to wait for an event to come back and see us. Use your dining rights, book a punt, attend Evensong or pop into the Café. You can find more information about your alumni benefits on our website: johnian.joh.cam.ac.uk/alumni-benefits

There’s no doubt that our College is a stunning place to behold. But the best part of St John’s has always been the people: the students, Fellows, staff and you, the alumni. In the upcoming months we’ll be conducting a survey to get your feedback and suggestions on all-things-alumni: events, publications, benefits, and opportunities to give back and get involved. Your input can still shape St John’s, and we hope you’ll take part in the conversation.
With warmest wishes,
Miranda Byers
