Wordsworth at Cambridge
The Johnian Society invites you to an online lecture exploring William Wordsworth’s (1787) time at Cambridge.
Wordsworth’s years at St John’s College were a formative period in the development of one of England’s greatest poets. This illustrated lecture traces his journey from the Lake District to 18th-century Cambridge, drawing on passages from his autobiographical poem, “The Prelude”, to recreate his experiences as an undergraduate.
Through contemporary images, historical context and Wordsworth’s own reflections, the talk explores student life, intellectual influences, friendships and the tension between academic expectations and his growing passion for poetry. It also considers how his time at St John’s shaped his intellectual development and influenced his later work.
The lecture will be delivered by Michael McGregor, The Robert Woof Director of the Wordsworth Trust, the charity that manages Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount, two of the UK’s leading literary heritage attractions. Michael has over 30 years’ experience working in the museum and heritage sector.
The session will be moderated by Nigel Snaith (1989), Chair of the Johnian Society Committee.
