Johnian Society News & Events

The Johnian Society was thrilled to welcome alumni of all generations back for another memorable Johnian Society Day on Saturday 28 September 2024. The beautiful grounds of the College once again served as the perfect backdrop for this annual gathering, where the Johnian community came together in celebration.

The day began with a warm welcome over tea and coffee in the Central Hall of the Old Divinity School, before attendees were led upstairs for an engaging talk on the English wine industry. This deep dive into the world of viticulture was expertly guided by wine historian Graham Harding (1968), who was joined by two distinguished Johnian winemakers: Sir Graham Wrigley (1982) of Chilworth Manor Vineyard and Jeremy Macklin (1979) of Marlbank Vineyard. Both shared their inspiring journeys into winemaking, offering personal anecdotes alongside professional insights into the craft behind their vineyards. Their discussion touched on the evolving status of UK wines in global markets, a topic that sparked much interest and reflection.

The conversation extended beyond the technicalities of winemaking, as Graham and Jeremy explored the profound impact of climate change on viticulture. Attendees gained valuable insights into how shifting weather patterns are affecting grape production, and how English winemakers are innovating and adapting to these challenges. This discussion showcased not only the industry’s resilience but also its forward-thinking approach in a rapidly changing environment. A recording of their talk can be found below.

Following the talk, attendees were treated to an exclusive wine tasting, featuring the very wines produced by Chilworth Manor. This interactive session proved to be a highlight of the day, as guests savoured the distinctive flavours of English wines.

As evening approached, alumni gathered for a reception of drinks and canapés back in Central Hall. The sound of the gong then summoned everyone to dinner in Hall.

Once seated, Claire Griffiths (1985) chaired the Johnian Society AGM, her final meeting as Chair of the Society. The business of the AGM was conducted smoothly, with the minutes of the previous meeting ratified by a unanimous chorus of ‘ayes’ from the members.

After dinner, the Master introduced Nigel Topping (1985), the President of the Johnian Society, who gave an inspiring speech. Reflecting on his time at St John’s, Nigel spoke of the lasting impact the College had on shaping both his life and career. His heartfelt words resonated with the audience, and he concluded by proposing a toast to the Johnian Society, celebrating the enduring legacy of this vibrant community.

The Master then delivered her own speech, providing Johnians with an update on the latest developments at the College. She highlighted the success of the recent telephone campaign and shared exciting news about the upcoming River Court developments, giving everyone much to look forward to in the future.

The evening continued in the College bar, where the spirit of the Johnian community was in full swing. Alumni mingled, laughed and shared memories, ensuring the day ended on a high note of joy and camaraderie.

We are already looking forward to welcoming everyone back for Johnian Society Day 2025, and continuing this wonderful tradition of connection and celebration!
