The Singapore Scholarship annually presents a prize of S$20,000 to the most talented Singaporean undergraduate to be offered a place at St John’s. The recipient is identified by a panel and is selected on the strength of their academic record to date, as well as on their potential to excel while at the College. As a result, the award both assists with the financial pressures of a university education and helps to encourage some of the brightest Singaporeans to apply to St John’s.
By offering financial assistance equal to that of our international counterparts, we can continue to attract, support and retain the most talented students from Singapore, and we can maintain our pre-eminent position as a world-class educator.
The St John’s Singapore Scholarship is a fantastic opportunity for Singaporean students to fully engage in their education during their time at the University of Cambridge and to participate in the numerous opportunities offered at St John’s. The Singapore Scholarship reaches out to highly ambitious students from all over Singapore and helps students and their families fund their experiences at the College without any financial worries.
Dr Matthias Dörrzapf, St John’s College Director of International Programmes and Director of Studies in Mathematics
As with almost every scholarship, bursary and prize that St John’s is able to provide, the Singapore Scholarship has been made possible through the generosity of Johnians. Donations of all sizes make a tangible difference, and below you will find a summary of how a gift to St John’s can benefit both our students and yourself:
Johnians living in Singapore are now able to support St John’s tax-effectively. As St John’s is a registered Institute of Public Character, all Singaporean taxpayers now benefit from an income tax deduction equal to 250% of the total given to St John’s in the preceding tax year. An example of how this works is below:
Value of gift | Value of tax deduction | Number of donors needed to provide next year’s Award |
---|---|---|
S$200 | S$500 | 100 |
S$500 | S$1,250 | 40 |
S$1,000 | S$2,500 | 20 |
S$5,000 | S$12,500 | 4 |
There is no need to declare the amount given in your income tax return, as all deductions are calculated using information provided to the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) by St John’s. In order to ensure that your gift qualifies for this deduction, you must donate to the Singapore Academic Award. Other College fundraising priorities do not qualify for this tax benefit.
Please ensure that any donation you choose to make is accompanied by your contact details and identification number (NRIC, FIN or UEN).
