Alumni crews reunite for Head of the Cam race

Alumni crews from St John’s enjoyed a nostalgic day rowing together again for the Head of the Cam event followed by a barbecue at the Lady Margaret Boat Club.

The Club entered six boats into the race, five eights and one quad, with groups of alumni represented from across the decades. The Recent Alumni eight won their division.

The Men’s Crew from 1989 and the Women’s Crew from 1991, who both took Headship in their years, reunited for the day. Other Johnian crews were drawn from alumni of the seventies, eighties and noughties. The event took place on 26 April.

LMBC Honorary Secretaries Harry Fieldhouse (2018) and Eleanor Laughton (2020) helped organised the day for alumni. Harry said: “We had nice weather and it was a great day for the rowing. Everyone enjoyed themselves and it was a good opportunity for people to catch up. There were some interesting stories shared by the alumni about their experiences when they were rowing with the LMBC. It was lovely to see people who had retained such strong friendships over the years since rowing together.”

The 1989 Men’s crew, who had retained Headship in their year had never actually seen the plate they won. They were invited to the Master’s Lodge to finally see the plate, which is currently held by St John’s. Martin Coen, one of the 1989 Crew said: “Heather very kindly invited us to the Lodge ahead of ‘racing’ to see the Mays plate. A real treat for the crew as in 1989 we weren’t even aware it existed.”
