Stuart Mayes (1957)

Stuart read mechanical sciences and spent his career as a patent and trade mark attorney, mostly as a partner for a larger London firm. He also chaired a non-governmental committee which advised the European Commission in the creation of a European Community Trademark. Much of his time at John's was devoted to playing hockey, for which he gained a blue. He was then capped for both England and Great Britain in the 1960 Olympics. Later, he managed the England team for one season. He retired in 1999 and since then has lived in North Devon, Surrey and Portugal. A highlight of every year is meeting the Johnian golfers and spending two nights dining and staying in College, which he feels is a very good way of keeping in touch with St John's.
