Johnians value their life-long relationship with the College, and this connection with our alumni is something we aim to nurture and support. To this end, the College offers alumni a number of benefits, including access to College premises, opportunities to dine, invitations to events, and communications. These benefits are privileges, not rights, and their being offered depends on the conduct of an alumnus meeting the expectations set out in this Code of Behaviour.
The Code reflects the College’s commitment to creating an environment that is welcoming to and protects the dignity of all, honouring the College’s values and protecting the good standing of St John’s. It describes our expectations for how alumni will behave towards other Johnians, and to visitors, guests and associates whether of the College or its members. The Code applies when engaging in College activities or events, and/or on College premises.
Scope
This Code of Behaviour applies whenever Johnian alumni, and where appropriate their friends or guests, take part in College-related activities, whether on College property, using College facilities or at College events. When joining online events or College-affiliated platforms, Johnians are asked to uphold the same standards of respect and courtesy as in person.
Expectations
We ask that Johnians and those accompanying them:
– Treat all individuals with dignity, fairness and courtesy.
– Refrain from behaviour that is discriminatory, demeaning, offensive, dangerous, alarming or harassing.
– Respect privacy and data protection when engaging online or sharing content.
– Follow the rules applying to an event and/or venue.
– Take responsibility for their own safety and help maintain the safety of others.
– Report concerns or dangerous situations to event organisers or Porters promptly.
– Do not interfere with or damage College property or event equipment.
– Do not enter restricted or student-only areas (eg bedrooms and living spaces) without relevant permission.
– Consume alcohol, smoke and vape only where permitted.
If a Johnian or their friend/guest behaves in a way that the College considers inappropriate in relation to this Code of Behaviour, the College may decide to restrict its relationship with that person for a period of time or, in some cases, permanently. The measures open to the College include, but are not limited to, asking Johnians to leave events, a suspension from future events, and/or constraints on access to College premises or facilities. A Johnian whose behaviour is being considered in this way will be invited to provide their account of the incident or matter under review. The decision on measures to be taken by the College will reside with the Master acting on the advice of College Officers. Decisions will be confirmed in writing and a copy retained in College alumni records.
The College Council may, in cases of deep concern, determine that an alumnus should be deprived of their membership of the College.
Complaints about alumni behaviour should be submitted in writing to the Development Director. All complaints will be treated seriously and, where appropriate, investigated promptly.
Approved January 2026 by College Officers. Next review due January 2027.
