Graduate scholarships

PhotoThrough the generosity of donors, St John’s is able to offer full or partial scholarships for students to study at graduate level at the College for an MPhil (1 year) or PhD (usually 3 years).  These scholarships cover University and College fees, a maintenance grant, and where appropriate travel expenses to and from the Scholar’s home.

Since sponsorship is more freely available from commerce and industry for students undertaking research in Maths and the Sciences, the majority of scholarships at St John’s are for the Arts and Humanities.  Scholarships can be applied for in Architecture, Law, Archaeology, Philosophy, History and Psychology, as well as for candidates from South Africa, India, and students at university in Rome.

Benefactors' Scholarships

The College offers a select number of scholarships to the highest calibre of applicant across all disciplines. The Benefactors' Scholarships cost the College in the region of £500,000 each year and, as the name suggests, are substantially supported by past donations.

International Scholarships

Within the Benefactors' Scholarship scheme, there are several named awards available to applicants from overseas. These include the Bradlow Scholarship for South African nationals, and the Luisa Aldobrandini Studentship for students from one of the universities of Rome.

Subject Scholarships

Also administered by the Benefactors' Scholarship scheme are several named scholarships for the study of particular subjects. These include the Craik Scholarship for Physiological Psychology, the JC Hall Scholarship for Law, the Pelling Scholarship for History and the Paskin Scholarship for study of either Archaeology or Philosophy.

Manmohan Singh Scholarship Programme

Named in honour of Dr Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India, this programme has enabled academically outstanding Indian students to undertake doctoral degrees in Science & Technology, Economics and Social Sciences since 2007. The College admits three or four scholars each year, each costing £35,000 per year.
