Undergraduate bursaries, awards & hardship grants

Since the government has raised the cap on tuition fees to compensate for the reduced teaching budgets allocated to universities, undergraduate students will now pay fees of up to £9,000 per year.  In addition, students have to meet the cost of accommodation, food, books and travel which is estimated to be between £7,000 and £8,000 a year so it is not difficult to see why this may deter some applicants from applying to St John’s. St John’s is committed to admitting the best students, regardless of background and to ensuring that no student leaves the College through financial difficulty. We aim to meet the demand for financial assistance through the following schemes:

Means-tested bursaries

Means-tested bursaries of up to £3,500 (or £5,650 for mature students) are available for undergraduates with a household income below £42,620 for each year of study and do not have to be paid back. Qualifying students will receive the bursary in addition to any grant or loan for maintenance received from the government. At present, the College awards over 100 bursaries every year. For many students, this contribution has been an economic lifeline, alleviating financial worry and promoting personal and intellectual development. The College seeks to increase bursary funding and to establish a similar fund for those in financial need from middle-income families.

Hardship grants

Small grants of up to £300 help students who encounter unexpected financial hardship. For some students this can make the difference between staying or deferring because of their financial circumstances.

Book grants

The College offers book grants to contribute towards course materials and relevant literature to help broaden and deepen subject knowledge.

Travel awards & summer research projects

The College offers a range of travel awards to enable students to explore the world and develop academic interests and independent thought.  Summer research projects enable students to apply their studies to practical situations in different parts of the world or to attend summer learning programmes.
