Give As You Earn

Give As You Earn (GAYE), or payroll giving, allows you to make a donation from your pre-tax income.

If your employer or pension provider runs a payroll giving scheme, you simply authorise them to make the donation from your wages or pension before deducting any tax. The donations are made after National Insurance contributions are calculated but before Income Tax is deducted. This means that you get tax relief on your donation immediately.

By using payroll giving, or GAYE, a donation to the College of £100 will cost a Basic rate tax-payer £80, while the cost to a Higher rate taxpayer will be £60.

You can use GAYE if:

  • you are an employee and you are paid weekly or monthly through PAYE
  • you receive a company and/or personal pension and your provider deducts tax through PAYE

In addition, your employer or pension provider will need to run a payroll giving scheme. If they don't, you could ask if they would be willing to start one.
