About the LMBC

The heart of College life

PhotoFounded in 1825, the LMBC is the oldest boat club on the Cam and has, over the years, introduced many Johnians to the joy of rowing. In fact, over two-thirds of freshers sign up to novice teams, which don the Cam at all hours and times of the year.  Membership of the LMBC is open to all College members and no previous experience is required, and so it is no surprise that it forms such a big part of College life. The LMBC also boasts a string of historical successes and has filled no less than 35 seats in Great Britain international crews since 1957.

For many, rowing at St John’s shapes the College experience and has helped to instigate lifelong friendships.  LMBC fixtures and reunions help to keep this community spirit alive, providing an opportunity for Johnians to relive their days on the river, and to share anecdotes of their time celebrating afterwards!
